What do I need to know about engine oils?

Engines are complex parts of motorcycles that perform under a broad spectrum of temperatures, as such you must assure that you fill them with the right motorcycle engine oil. Motorcycle engine oil not only serves as a cooling agent and lubricant, but it also shields the engine driving parts from damage and erosion.
Motorcycle engines require oil with a specific viscosity, which refers to the oil´s thickness or resistance to flow. The recommended viscosity for your motorcycle can be found in the owner´s manual or on the manufacturer´s website.
As the oil in your engine warms it becomes thinner, multi grade engine oils thin slightly when the motorcycle engine is at its operational temperature. This permits the engine to hold a stable oil pressure.

When to change the engine oil?

As your motorcycle engine ignites fuel damaging pollutants build up and are mixed within the engine oil. This pollutes the oil within the engine, changing your engine oil after a short time enables you to release these pollutants and refills the additives which defend your engine. Change your motorcycle´s oil at the recommended intervals to ensure proper engine lubrication and prevent damage. The oil change interval can vary depending on factors such as the type of oil, the engine´s condition, and the riding conditions.

Engine oil composition

Each factory has its composition, however, nearly all motorcycle engine oils are created within 80 90% base oil. The rest of 10 20% of the oil is created up of a combination of additives developed to assist retain the consistency of the oil at high temperatures. Some engine oils contain additives that can improve performance, reduce engine wear, and extend the life of the engine. Look for oils with additives such as detergents, anti wear agents, and corrosion inhibitors.
The brands that offer engine oils are Motul, Rtech, Twin Air, Motorex, and Castrol.
